Campaign Monitor Information and Functionality

Overview

Campaign Monitor is an email marketing tool that can work in conjunction with Salesforce to market to broad or specific individuals interests.  Campaign Monitor can be used within Salesforce or from the Campaign Monitor website and utilizes email Campaigns, Journeys, and other automation tools to connect with existing and potential customers.

Below is some information on Campaign Monitor and how it works together with Salesforce.

Preference Center
Can be used as both an alternative to customers unsubscribing and to indicate a change in their Area of Interest, for example.  This works like Manage Subscriptions, that other companies use to change your preferences of what you would like to receive going forward.

Custom Fields
Custom Fields can be created within the Import Wizard (need to be in the List View) or they can be added in Campaign Monitor in Field Mappings, which is within the Subscriber List, and can be used to create a field that doesn't necessary have the same name as a field in Salesforce.

Stop Segments
This is a feature within a Journey and within each email, where Campaign Monitor will check to see if the individual has an identified Segment, (Human Resources for example), and if they don't, will not send them that specific email.  This would need to be on each email as this check needs to be run each time, before an email is sent.  If not, Campaign Monitor has no way of knowing you left the HR Segment and you will get the next email.

List Views and Reports
List Views and Reports can be used to facilitate the creation of a Subscriber List.  They are used as a vehicle to transport individuals from Salesforce to Campaign Monitor and hold field and field values that can be updated in Campaign Monitor.  If someone drops off a List View or Report because they no longer meet the specifications of that Report or List View, they will still be subscribed to the associated Subscriber List if they are stored in Campaign Monitor.  List Views can hold a maximum of 15 fields, so Reports can be used to create Subscriber Lists that require a lot of fields and field values to go over to Campaign Monitor.  List Views are more accessible, easier to navigate and change quickly.  They are recommend for Subscriber Lists when only a few fields are necessary.

Subscriber Lists
Subscriber Lists are customized lists generated from certain individuals criteria stored in Salesforce  For instance, a Subscriber List could show all Contacts that are interested in Human Resources.  Subscriber Lists can be based off multiple List Views, Reports, or a mixture of both to create a Subscriber List.  Subscriber Lists have rules that dictate if someone should be Unsubscribed to just a specific Subscriber List or if they Unsubscribe, the list can dictate that they are Unsubscribed to all Subscriber Lists.

Subscribe and Unsubscribe
The only way someone becomes inactive or Unsubscribed is if they Unsubscribe themselves, they are manually Unsubscribed, an email to the Subscriber bounces, Email Opt-Out is set to True, or their record is deleted.  If someone is only on one Subscriber List and Unsubscribes, Email Opt-Out is set to True/is checked.  For that person to be added to a Subscriber List in the future, Email Opt-Out would need to be unchecked manually.

Syncing
Campaign Monitor syncs List Views and Reports on customizable frequencies (hourly, daily, etc).  These List Views and Reports make up Subscriber Lists and syncing them updates any changes to fields and values of those fields in Campaign Monitor for Subscribers.  For example, if Human Resources is added as someone’s Area of Interest, and that field is captured in the List View or Report, that change would be carried over to Campaign Monitor on the next sync.  Subscriber Rules can be setup to instantly sync an individual that comes into Salesforce.  This is so when a Lead comes in, for instance, that Lead will be immediately moved over to Campaign Monitor on an applicable Subscriber List.  The Lead wouldn’t have to wait for the next sync scheduled time to be available in Campaign Monitor to receive communications or enter a Journey, for example.

Field Mappings
Field Mappings can be used within Subscriber Lists to dictate the sync direction.  Syncing can go from Salesforce to Campaign Monitor or vice versa.  In general, syncing from Salesforce to Campaign Monitor is recommended, although syncing from Campaign Monitor to Salesforce may be useful for features like the Preference Center, which could update customer preferences from an email back to their Salesforce record.
