Navigate to E-list Configuration Options
- Log in to Simplelists.
- In the left menu, select manage lists.
- Select Settings for the desired list.
Review Description and Welcome Message
Under the General tab, review the e-list description, subscribe and unsubscribe options, and set your default welcome e-mail message for new members.
- [Optional] Welcome Message - Simplelists e-lists have a default welcome message that is sent to new members. If you don't want a default message sent, you can delete the welcome message from the e-list configuration before adding any new members.
- [Optional] Confirmation message - This message is sent only if a user signs up through a subscription link or if an administrator chooses to send a confirmation message when adding a new member. The recipient must click a link to verify their email address and confirm that they want to join the list.

Review Posting Restrictions, Including Maximum E-mail Message Size
Under the Posting Restrictions tab, review the e-mail size limit and posting permissions.
Maximum E-mail Message Size
Note: The default email size limit is 4096 KB (4 MB). You can increase this limit, but larger message sizes may increase the likelihood of slow delivery or delivery issues for some recipients. (The current maximum setting is 30 MB, but if larger message sizes become a widespread issue, Cornell IT may reduce that limit in the future.)
Recommendation: Leave the default setting unless you have a specific reason to increase it. Do not set the maximum size above 10 MB. Because the setting is entered in KB, use 10240 for 10 MB. (See screenshot example below.)

Posting Restrictions
Review the posting permissions carefully and select the option that best fits your list.
For most use cases, the recommended setting is "Choose specific people who can send messages..."
- Option 1: Discussion e-list – Use the following setting when all members should be able to send messages and reply to the full list.
- Select "Allow members of specific lists to post to this list"
- Option 2: Announcement/e-news list – Use the following setting when only specific email addresses should be allowed to send messages to all members.
- Select "Choose specific email addresses to post to the list" and enter in each e-mail that is allowed.

E-mail Modification (setting default e-mail subject prefix, headers and footers)
- List replies - Review and select the option that best fits your e-list.
- Option 1: "Replies go to the poster of message"
This is usually the best setting for an announcement e-list.
- Option 2: "Replies go to the list email address"
This is usually the best setting for a discussion e-list, where replies should go to all members.
- Note: Make sure the reply setting matches your posting restrictions. If “Allow members...” is not selected, members who reply to the list may receive a “Your message was rejected” notification.
- [OPTIONAL] Subject Prefix
- If set, this text will appear in the subject line of every message sent to recipients. This can be useful for standardization and easy identification.
- Examples:
- "CCE Cattaraugus MG News:"
- "CCE WSBN IT News:"
- [OPTIONAL] HTML message header
- If set, this text will appear at the top of every email message.
- Example: "This message is being sent to all CCE Cattaraugus MG volunteers."
- HTML formatting and merge tags can be used in the HTML header message.
- Example:
<small><em>This message is being sent to all members of the <b>$LIST_NAME</b> list.</em></small><br><br>
- [STRONGLY RECOMMENDED] HTML message footer
- If set, this text will be displayed at the bottom of every e-mail message sent out. It is strongly recommended that every message include an unsubscribe link for recipients. The footer can also be used to add contact information, a website link, or standard CCE statement.
- Example using HTML formatting and merge tags:
<br><br><small><em>How to unsubscribe: $UNSUBSCRIBE</em></small>
Example of Email modifications for an Announcement e-list:
Based on the settings above, below is what the original e-mail sent out from Outlook will look like versus what the recipient e-mail will look like.
Original e-mail being sent out from Outlook:
Recipient view of e-list message with prefix, header and footer added:
NOTE: Merge tags DO NOT WORK in Outlook e-mails. They are only available when setting up HTML headers and footers within the Simplelists website, as shown above.
List member view
List member view allows members to see who else belongs to the list. When enabled, members can request access through lists.cornell.edu or through the list home page, if that option is enabled.
For most announcement or e-newsletter e-lists, this should be set to “Do not allow list members to view each other” to help protect member privacy.
