Having legitimate e-mails going to the Junk folder can be no less annoying than having spam email in your Inbox. No spam filtering system is perfect but we definitely want to keep it around - it helps warn us about possible malicious e-mails.
Legitimate e-mails can end up in Junk for a number of reasons, such as (but not limited to) unknown sender, possible unsafe attachment(s) or particular wording found within the message such as "permanently deleted" or "take action now" that are commonly used in phishing e-mails.
The spam filter moves possible junk messages into our Junk folder, and then we can review and decide, after careful examination, what may or may not be Junk.
You can apply the techniques below to help “train” your e-mail on what should (or should not) be trusted.
Mark E-mail as "Not Junk" / Add to Safe Sender List
If email is going to your Outlook Junk folder by mistake, you can mark it as "Not Junk" or add the sender to your Safe Senders list.
- Open your Junk Email folder and right click on the message that is not junk.
- Select “Junk” to open more options
- Select “Not Junk”
- Pop up message will let you know it will move that message back into your Inbox.
- If you check the checkbox, it will also save that e-mail as a trusted sender.
- Click OK
Please note: The opposite is also true. If junk e-mail is found in your Inbox, you can right click on the message and select “Block Sender”.
Example:
In the example below, I believe these Verizon messages are going to junk due to the fact that the word “Deactivate” is used in multiple types of phishing scams.
View Safe and Blocked Senders
In the same Junk options menu, you can select “Junk E-mail Options” to view and update your safe and blocked senders.
