Updating to Windows 11 via Software Center
This guide will walk you through 5 simple steps to update your Windows 10 device to Windows 11 using the Software Center. This process is designed to be straightforward and efficient. Please read and follow the instructions carefully.
**** Important Notes: ****
- Please expect the update to take up to 2 hours. You will still be able to work as the update is installing. Once you are prompted to reboot the system to finish installing the update, please expect the reboot time to take up to half an hour. You may not be able to use your system while the reboot is occurring.
- If you are working remotely, please make sure you are connected to the Cornell ILR VPN. This will give your computer the ability to retrieve these updates. Instructions to connecting to the Cornell ILR VPN can be found here.
Step 1: Navigate to the Windows Start Menu, click the Windows Icon.

Step 2: In the Start Menu Search bar, search for “Software Center” and click “open”. If you do not have a search box just start typing after clicking on the Windows Start menu.

Step 3: Once the Software Center has opened, on the left side, click “Updates”.

Step 4: Locate the list item titled “Windows 11, version 24H2 x64 2024-10B" and click this.

Step 5: The update information will be displayed. Verify the update reads, “Windows 11, version 24H2 x64 2024-10B" and click “Install”.

The update will begin installing and you can continue utilizing your machine while it is doing so. Once you are prompted to reboot the system (do not reboot unless you are able to wait the 30minutes), you will want to ensure all of your work that is opened is saved, in-order to finish installing the update. Please expect the reboot time to take up to 30 minutes. You will not be able to utilize the machine during this ~30minute reboot.
