Clean up Chrome settings

There are a variety of reasons you may want to clean up your Chrome browser settings.  Including:

  • Fix loading issues - Clearing your cache and cookies can fix problems with loading or formatting websites. 

  • Remove unwanted software, ads, pop-ups and malware

  • Reset settings - If your browser isn't working as intended, you can reset your Chrome settings to their original defaults. This won't change or clear your saved bookmarks. 

Clear browsing data

Pages not loading correctly?  Passwords showing up in user name fields?  Go through these steps to clear cached credentials and website cookies.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click the in the upper right

  3. Select Settings from dropdown menu.
  4. In the left menu, click on to "Privacy and security” and click Clear browsing data
  5. Click Advanced tab
  6. In drop down menu, select All time
  7. Select the options you wish to clear
    • Recommendations:
      • Cookies and other site data
      • Cached images and files
      • Passwords and other sign-in data
      • Autofill form data

  8. Click Clear data

Reset your browser settings

Are you seeing spam pop-ups on the right from Google Chrome?  Reset your browser settings.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click the in the upper right
  3. Select Settings from dropdown menu.
  4. Scroll down to bottom in the left menu to "Reset settings” and click Restore settings to their original defaults.
  5. Click Reset settings
    Please note that this action will:
    • Reset Chrome settings and Chrome shortcuts
    • Disable extensions
    • Delete cookies and other temporary site data


      Bookmarks, history, and saved passwords won't be affected.

Run a Security Check

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click the in the upper right
  3. Select Settings from dropdown menu.
  4. In the left menu, click on to "Privacy and security” and click Check now
  5. Close and reopen Chrome.
