Remotely Connecting to Windows PC from MacOS - All-in-One Guide

Install the Cornell VPN Client. (For a NON-CU managed Mac)

  1. Connect to https://cuvpn.cuvpn.cornell.edu. The SSL VPN Service Login dialog box will open.
  2. Enter the following:
  • Group: Leave this set to CornellVPN (even if you will be using a departmental VPN after installing AnyConnect).
  • User Name: Enter your Cornell NetID.
  • Password: Enter your Cornell NetID password.

  1. A Downloads page will appear after a successful login. It may take a few seconds to a few minutes to collect information about your system.
  2. If you see two tabs labeled Download and Automatic Provisioning, select Download. (It's okay if you don't see these tabs.)
  3. Click Download for macOS.
  4. Navigate to your default downloads folder and double-click the AnyConnect .dmg file, then double-click the AnyConnect pkg file.  You may be asked to enter an administrative password for your computer.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.  If asked, on the Installation Type screen, make sure VPN is selected and everything else is not selected.
  6. If installing on macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or higher, you may see System Extension Blocked alert. If you see this alert, follow the steps below. Otherwise, continue with step 9 below.
    1. Click Open Preferences (or Open Security Preferences). The System Preferences - Security & Privacy panel will open.
    2. Next to System software from developer "Cisco" was blocked from loading click Allow.
    3. Close the Security & Privacy Panel.
    4. Click OK or Dismiss on the Extension Blocked dialog box.
  7. Close the installer
  8. From there you can open the application from the applications folder, or from the taskbar at the top.



 

  1. When then VPN opens it might require a location – if it does put in cuvpn.cuvpn.cornell.edu then click connect.
  • The group remains CornellVPN
    Username: netid@fh-vpn
    Password: netid password

The first time you connect the VPN might require an update, it will happen automatically.


Connecting via Remote Desktop

  1. Download Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 from the Appstore (older versions will NOT work)

  1. Install the app normally
  2. From the app – click on the + symbol and then desktop

  1. PC name is – computername.human.cornell.edu (To find on a Win 10 machine: in the search box in the lower left corner type - “Name” in the search box – one of the options will be “View your PC name”)

  1. On the user account pull down click add user account

  1. Leave the password blank, it will prompt for it when you connect Click add
  2. Click add again to add the device, which saves it on the connection center.
  3. To connect, first connect to the VPN then double click the remote computer in the Remote Desktop client.
