Remotely Connecting to Windows PC from Windows - All-in-One Guide

What is needed:

  • Your office computer must be turned on and left running to remotely connect.
  • You need to find the full computer name of your office computer.
  • You need to have the Cornell Cisco VPN downloaded and installed on your work from home computer.
  • You will need Microsoft’s Remote Desktop app.  It comes on all Cornell-funded computers.  You can download it here.

Download and Install the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility VPN

  1. Connect to https://cuvpn.cuvpn.cornell.edu. The SSL VPN Service Login dialog box will open.
  2. Enter the following:
    • Group: Leave this set to CornellVPN
(even if you will be using a departmental VPN after installing AnyConnect).
    • User Name: Enter your Cornell NetID.
    • Password: Enter your Cornell NetID password.

  1. Downloads page will appear after a successful login. It may take a few seconds to a few minutes to collect information about your system.
  2. If you see two tabs labeled Download and Automatic Provisioning, select Download. (It's okay if you don't see these tabs.)
  3. Click Download for Windows.
  4. The file should be saved in the default download folder. Locate the file named anyconnect-win-<version number>-core-vpn-webdeploy-k9.msi then double-click to open it.
  5. Click Run. You may be asked to enter an administrative password for your computer.
  6. Follow the instructions on screen.

Connect to VPN

If your work from home computer is a Human Ecology configured computer, then all software is already installed and you are ready to login to the VPN and Remote Desktop.  Follow the previous steps to install the VPN software on your personal computer.

To connect to the VPN, click on the arrow on the bottom right or your screen near the clock and select - Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client VPN.  You can also find the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client VPN under Start – Cisco – Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client VPN.

In the white drop-down field, make sure it reads cuvpn.cuvpn.cornell.edu

Select Connect

A Cisco AnyConnect box will pop up asking for your login information.  Use your NetID@fh-vpn for your username and your normal NetID password as your password.  Click OK.

Now you should be connected to VPN.  A popup box will appear on the bottom right again confirming you’re connected.  You’ll also see a globe icon with a lock on the bottom right.

Connect to Your Office PC

Open Remote Desktop by going to Start - Windows Accessories - Remote Desktop Connection.

In the Remote Desktop Connection box type in your full office computer name and click Connect.

Now, a logon window will appear asking for your credentials.  On Windows 10 you will need to select More choices, then select Use a different account.  Once you have done that, you can enter your login as NetID@cornell.edu.  For example: rh96@cornell.edu

When you’re finished working remotely, logoff your office computer as normal.  When you logoff, you will be disconnected from your office computer.  All that’s left is to disconnect from VPN.  To do that go back to the arrow on the bottom right of your screen near the clock-> click on Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client (globe with a lock) -> Disconnect
