Description

A Canon ImageClass MF656CDW all-in-one printer is located at the UB office for staff.  It is not on the network.  Educators can print to it via a USB cable connection.

 

Procedure to install printer

NOTE: Do NOT plug in the USB cable into the computer until you are prompted during installation.

NOTE: Past issues with Windows 11 24h2 update causing an issue, and printer suddenly will not print.  See troubleshooting section below.

  1. Log in under local admin account on the computer.
  2. Go to Canon Support for Color imageCLASS MF656Cdw | Canon U.S.A., Inc. 
    • Download "Master Setup (Windows)" installer
    • Download "MF Scan Utility" installer
  3. Right click Master Setup installer and run as administrator.  Follow on screen prompts.
  4. Verify test page printed.
  5. Double click to install the "MF Scan Utility".  Follow on screen prompts.
  6. RESTART the computer.
  7. Test printing a Word document.
  8. Test scanning with the MF Scan Utility.
  9. Restart or log out, and have the staff person log in under their own profile.  Test printing and scanning.

 

Troubleshooting

Issue: Printer was printing but has stopped, shows error in print queue.

  1. Restart the computer and try to print again.
  2. Turn off printer, wait a minute and turn the printer back on.
  3. Verify the printer is on and both ends of the USB cable are securely connected, to the printer and to the computer.
  4. Any error lights or messages on the printer?  If no, continue to next steps.  If yes, any indication of error?  Paper jam, toner low?
  5. If no errors on printer, try plugging in the USB cable into a different USB port on computer.  Test printing again.

If none of the above fix the issue, reach out to IT support.

For IT support:

  1. Log in under local admin account on the computer.
  2. Click Start and go search for "Print Management"
  3. Under "All Printers", right click and delete any instances of the Canon printer 
  4. Under "All Drivers", right click and delete any instances of the Canon driver
  5. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers - ensure all instances have been removed
  6. Open Control Panel > Programs and Features - uninstall any Canon printer software
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Log in under local admin account and proceed to the install steps outlined above.
