Body
Extra laptops are typically older laptops that are four years or older, and not meant for every day staff use. Regional IT staff have cleaned them, set them up with basic software (Adobe Reader, Office 365) and labeled as “EXTRA” or “LOANER” with the year it was purchased (so it is easily identifiable which is the newest of the extra computers available).
Local IT staff turn them on routinely so that Windows stays up to date, but it is highly recommended that you allow extra time to turn on the computer, allow Windows to check for updates and restart the computer before you need to utilize it during a meeting and/or presentation.
Please see your local IT contact or Executive Director for a list of available extra computers and the procedure for signing one out.
Who can use this service/system?
CCE Western NY region
How do I log into an extra computer?
You have a couple of options.
- Your NetID credentials – if YOU will be using the laptop
- If you are in the office, connected to the Cornell network, and will be the only one using the laptop while logged into it - you can log in with your own NetID credentials.
- If you need to use the laptop away from the office and be signed in as yourself, be sure to sign into the computer before taking it offsite, so it can cache your credentials.
- NEVER log in as yourself and then hand it over to someone else to use.
- Local User account (“Presentation”) – if anyone else is using it
- If the computer will be used by someone who does not have a Cornell NetID or a Sponsored NetID, use this account – whether it is in the office or not.
- Do not share this account password with non-CCE staff UNLESS approved by the Executive Director (traditionally approved to be given to long-term volunteers).
- If you are out of the office and have never logged into this specific computer before, you will need to log in with the local “Presentation” account.
