Mann Library B30A/B Computer Lab

Summary

Describes the Mann Library B30A/B computer labs, how to use the computers in these rooms, and how to submit software requests.

Body

Description

CALS OIT maintains two computer labs located in B30A and B30B in the basement of Mann Library.  This article provides details about the computing environment in these spaces.

Technology in Use

AV Technology

Both rooms are equipped with Crestron controllers built into the podium where you can control the AV components in the space.  Laminated instructions for operating the Crestron panels can be found at the podium.

Computers

B30A has 45 Windows PCs (44 student workstations, and 1 instructor computer at the podium).

B30B has 30 Windows PCs (29 student workstations, and 1 instructor computer at the podium).

Software

The computers are configured with Windows 11, and basic productivity software (Microsoft Office, Acrobat Reader, Chrome, Zoom, etc.).  In addition to the basic productivity software, Faronics Insight software is installed allowing instructors to display and control student workstations.  Also deployed is, Faronics Deepfreeze, which is used to keep the computers from straying from their original configuration.  This means, any changes made to the computer (configuration changes, freshly installed software) will revert upon reboot.

For software needs beyond this, CIT's Apps on Demand and Azure Virtual Desktop offerings should be leveraged.  For more on how to make requests of CIT for new software, see the section below titled How to Request New Software.

Computer Usage

All computers in the labs automatically login upon start up with a general account.  This account operates as a local administrator.  However, as noted above, due to the use of Deeapfreeze, any changes made to the computer will revert when rebooted.  This also means any data users store on the local C: drive will not persist through a reboot.  If you wish for files to remain on the workstations, please store these data on the secondary drive labeled PlaceHolder.

Student Workstations

In each room, the monitors of student workstations are labeled with numbers that correspond with how they are named within the Faronics Insight console.

Instructor Workstations

The instructor workstations at each podium have the Faronics Insight console.  Instructions for accessing this can be found at the lecturn.

How to Request New Software

To request new software for use in the lab, please see CIT's service page.
