Dealing with Home Internet Slowness Related to CrashPlan

Problem

Due to CrashPlan (formerly Code42) being a cloud based backup solution, sometimes your home Internet connection may become saturated with CrashPlan traffic.  When this happens you, or others using your home Internet, may experience general Internet slowness.

In some cases your home Internet may be limited by data caps (a limit on how much data you may use per month).

Action You Can Take

Limited or very slow Internet

Your initial backup might take a very long time to complete.

You could start the backup in the evening or over a weekend.

You can also take your computer to a location with a faster internet connection.  Here are some outdoor locations on campus that offer WiFi.

Limited or very slow Internet Scheduled backup could interfere with other users on your network. You can pause CrashPlan for 1 hour, 4 hours, or 1 day right from the application icon.

Backups will begin automatically once the pause period is over.
Limited data allowance (cap)
You might exceed your data cap.  Especially during your first backup.
Suggestions for this will depend on the size of your data cap, your average use, and the data on your computer. Please contact CALS-OIT to discuss this.
