Description
Having sufficient drive space to install security updates and OS upgrades is critically important for ensuring a secure computing environment at Cornell. In fact, Cornell's Information Security Policy 5.10 requires the timely patching of all endpoints.
If your CALS OIT-managed computer has insufficient drive space for updates/upgrades, please follow the steps below to free up space.
Process
Use the steps below to scan your system disk and free up space. If you have any questions or would like assistance, please submit a help request.
Install Disk Drill
Following the steps outlined in the
Self Service Software KB article, install
Disk Drill from the list of available software titles.
Free Up Space Using Disk Drill

- From your Applications folder, find and launch Disk Drill.
- From Disk Drill's left-hand menu, select Clean Up.
- Select the disk you wish to scan and click on Start Scan.
- When the scan completes, you will be presented with a hierarchical view of your file system showing you the size of each subdirectory.
- Expand subdirectories to reveal the files/folders within that are taking up disk space.
- Select files/folders you wish to delete by placing a checkmark in the left-most box next to each one.
- When you're through selecting files/folders to be deleted, click on Remove.
Note: Removal of files/folders using Disk Drill is permanent.
Install TreeSize Free
Following the steps outlined in the
Self Service Software KB article, install
TreeSize Free from the list of available software titles.
Free Up Space Using TreeSize Free
- From the Windows Start Menu, search for and launch TreeSize Free.
- TreeSize Free will automatically begin scanning your system drive upon launch, presenting you with a hierarchical view of your file system showing you the size of each subdirectory.
- Expand subdirectories to reveal the files/folders within that are taking up disk space.
- As you identify files/folders you wish to delete, right-click and select Delete. Doing so will move the files/folders to your Recycle Bin.
- Browse to your Desktop, right-click on your Recycle Bin and select Empty Recycle Bin.
Note: Emptying your Recycle Bin permanently deletes files from your computer.
