Box: Move Existing Folders into Your Department's Box Folder

Summary

Move folders you own or that were shared with you into your department's Box folder.

Body

Use these steps to move folders you already have in Box into your department's Box folder. What you can move depends on your role on the folder.

Folders you own

These steps work whether or not the folder is shared.

  1. Select the folder.
  2. Click the three dots (More Options).
More Options button next to a selected folder
  3. Click Move or Copy.
  4. Select the destination folder.
Move or Copy window with a destination folder selected
  5. Click Move.

Folders shared with you

Before you start:

  • Only the folder's owner can move the folder itself. Co-owners and editors can move only its subfolders and files.
  • Moving items removes access for the person who shared them and transfers ownership to Cornell.
  1. Click the subfolder you want to move.
  2. Click the three dots (More Options).
  3. Click Move or Copy.
  4. Select the destination folder.
  5. Click Move.
  6. Box then shows a message. What you do next depends on who shared the folder with you:
    • Shared by someone at Cornell: if an error message appears, click Details, then click Move.
Box error message with a Details link
Box details window with a Move button
    • Shared by someone outside Cornell: when the confirmation message appears, click Okay.
Box confirmation message when moving an item from a folder owned outside Cornell
