Zoom Isn't Working on My Computer (Camera, Microphone, Audio, or Crashing)

Body

Who this is for / when to use it

Use this if Zoom on your JCB computer is misbehaving during meetings, it won't show your video, won't pick up your microphone or speakers, keeps freezing or crashing, or won't open or sign in. Work through the steps below in order; most Zoom problems are fixed in the first two or three.

This covers Zoom running on your own computer. It does not cover classroom or conference-room Zoom equipment, for room AV, contact JCB IT and we'll point you to the right team.

Before you start

  • You do not need your BitLocker recovery key, an admin password, or a new computer for any of this.
  • Two fixes clear the large majority of Zoom problems, so try them first, before anything else: fully quit and reopen Zoom, and if that doesn't help, restart your computer.
  • It helps to notice whether the problem happens only in Zoom or in other apps too (for example, is your camera also dead in Teams?), that tells you whether it's a Zoom problem or a device problem, and it's the first thing IT will ask.

Steps

First, the 30-second fixes

  1. Fully quit and reopen Zoom. Close the meeting and quit the Zoom app completely (don't just close the window), then reopen it. This clears most one-off glitches.
  2. Restart your computer if quitting Zoom didn't help, especially if your camera or mic worked yesterday and stopped today.
  3. Make sure only one app is using the camera/mic. Teams, another Zoom window, or a browser meeting tab holding the camera will block Zoom. Close the other one.
  4. Check you're on the current version. In Zoom, open your profile menu and choose Check for Updates; install any update and restart Zoom.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

No camera or video

  1. In a meeting, click the ^ arrow next to the Video button and make sure the correct camera is selected (not "Off" or a disconnected device).
  2. If the camera still doesn't appear, Zoom may not have permission to use it:
    • Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera, and make sure camera access is on and Zoom is allowed.
    • Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera, and turn on the switch for Zoom, then reopen Zoom.
  3. If a built-in privacy shutter or physical camera cover is closed, open it.
  4. Still nothing? A camera that no app can see may be a hardware issue — contact JCB IT

No sound, or my microphone isn't picked up

  1. In a meeting, click the ^ arrow next to the Mute / Audio button.
  2. Confirm the correct Microphone and Speaker are selected — pick your headset or built-in device, not a disconnected one.
  3. Use Test Speaker & Microphone in that same menu to confirm you can hear the test tone and see the mic level move
  4. If you joined by phone or "Call Me," make sure you didn't leave computer audio muted.
  5. Check the operating-system volume/output too — a wrong system output device is a common cause.

Zoom freezes, crashes, or won't open

  1. Restart the computer, then open Zoom before any other app.
  2. Update Zoom (see the 30-second fixes) — crashes are frequently fixed by an update.
  3. If Zoom won't launch at all, shows an error like a missing file, or crashes every time, it may need a clean reinstall. On a JCB-managed computer, reinstall Zoom from the software catalog — Software Center on Windows or Self Service on a Mac — rather than a download from the web (see the JCB "Install Software (Self-Service)" article).
  4. If it still crashes after a reinstall, contact JCB IT and mention what you were doing when it crashes (e.g. joining a meeting, sharing your screen).

Common problems / if that didn't work

  • The Zoom option disappeared from Outlook. If you used to schedule Zoom meetings from Outlook and the Zoom button or add-in is gone, the connection between Zoom and your Microsoft 365 calendar usually needs to be re-added. Contact JCB IT and say "the Zoom add-in / scheduling option is missing from Outlook" — this is a known, quick fix.
  • Your camera or microphone works in nothing — not just Zoom. That points to a device or operating-system issue rather than Zoom. Note where else it fails (e.g. camera also dead in Teams) and contact JCB IT.
  • You got an error that mentions needing an administrator. Don't go hunting for an admin password, note the exact wording and contact JCB IT; we'll handle the elevation.
  • Zoom still crashes after updating and reinstalling. Contact JCB IT with what you were doing when it crashes (joining, screen-sharing, etc.) so we can reproduce it.

Still stuck?

Contact JCB IT if you've worked through the steps above and Zoom still won't behave — especially if your camera/mic fails in other apps too, Zoom still crashes after an update and reinstall, you saw an "administrator" error, or you're about to teach or present and need it working now (tell us it's time-sensitive).

It helps to have ready:

  • Your NetID.
  • What's failing (camera / microphone / speaker / crashing / won't open) and when it started.
  • Whether it fails in other apps too (e.g. camera also dead in Teams) — that helps us tell a Zoom problem from a device problem.
