Who this is for / when to use it
Use this when you need access to a shared folder or file on the JCB Shared Drive — either you can't see it, can't open it, or need to be able to edit it.
These instructions are for Windows computers. On most JCB Windows computers the JCB Shared Drive appears as your J: drive. If you're on a Mac, see How to Connect to the JCB Shared Drive from an Apple Computer to connect the drive first.
Before you start
JCB IT grants this access for you. The most common reason a request gets delayed is missing details, so please include all of the following:
- The exact folder or file — the full path if you know it (e.g.
J:\Department\TeamFolder\...), or the drive letter + folder name. You can find the path by asking someone with access to right click the folder and select "properties".
- Who needs access — your name and NetID (and, if requesting for others, their names and NetIDs).
- What level of access — read-only (view/open) or read/write (edit/save/delete).
- Why / for how long, if it's time-limited or tied to a role.
Steps
- Submit a ticket to JCB IT, and include the details above.
- Wait for JCB IT to confirm your access has been granted.
- Restart your computer. New access usually doesn't take effect until you reboot — so restart before checking whether you can get into the folder.
Common problems / if that didn't work
- "IT said access was granted, but I still can't get in." — Restart your computer first; new access typically applies only after a reboot. If it's still wrong afterward, reply to your ticket.
- "I can see the folder but can't save changes." — You likely have read-only access; reply to your ticket and ask for read/write.
- "I'm not sure of the exact folder path." — Describe it as best you can (folder name and who else uses it). A quick shortcut: if you know someone who already has the access you need, name them in your ticket — JCB IT can look at their access to confirm exactly which folder and what permission level (read-only vs. read/write) you should get. The more specific you are, the faster it goes.
- "I have access but can't connect the drive on my Mac." — Once access is granted, see How to Connect to the JCB Shared Drive from an Apple Computer.
