WARNING: When you delete an item in Box, the item is moved to your Trash and remains there for up to 30 days allowing you time to recover the item. After 30 days, Box will remove the item from your trash and mark it to be permanently deleted after 20 days allowing you time to submit a ticket to have the item recovered. After 20 days, the item is permanently deleted and unrecoverable. Each item in the trash folder will show you the date it was deleted and when the 30 days will expire.
To permanently delete specific items in Trash:
The steps below apply whether you’re selecting from search results or from all Trash items.
- Hover to highlight the row of the item you want. The More Options ellipsis (…) displays.
- Click the ellipsis (...). Then:
- To delete the item permanently, click Delete.
- At the prompt, click Okay.

You can also act on multiple items at once. To do this, use the multi-select key combination for your OS (Windows or Mac). When you have selected all the items you want, right-click anywhere in a selected area. Then click Delete.
You can also delete the entire contents of the Trash folder. To do this, open your Trash folder. Then:
- To permanently delete the entire contents of your trash, towards the top-right, click Delete All.
- Delete All affects all files in your trash, not just those displayed.
The Delete All option does not display if you do not have permission to delete items from your trash.
