Who this is for / when to use it
Use this if you need access to a shared folder, drive, or file at JCB and you're not sure how to ask for it — or you're not even sure which kind of shared location it is. This page points you to the right instructions for each of the most common cases.
At JCB, most shared files live in one of three places. Use the short descriptions below to figure out which one you mean, then follow the matching link.
Not sure which one you need?
- The JCB Shared Drive (your J: drive). A network drive that appears on most JCB Windows computers as J:. It holds department and team folders that live on JCB's own file server. If you get to the folder through a drive letter (like
J:\Department\...) or through a mapped network drive, this is the one.
- A Box department folder. Box is Cornell's cloud storage service. If your group keeps its files in Box — through the Box website or the Box Drive app on your computer — and you need into a department or shared Box folder, this is the one.
- A OneDrive or SharePoint folder. These are Microsoft cloud locations, usually shared with you directly by whoever owns the folder (for example, a link or an invitation that arrives by email). If someone shared a folder with you from OneDrive or a SharePoint / Teams site, this is the one.
Get access to the JCB Shared Drive (J: drive)
JCB IT grants this access for you. See Request access to a shared folder on the JCB Shared Drive for exactly what to include in your request (the folder path, who needs access, and whether you need read-only or read/write).
Get access to a Box department folder
Box access is usually handled by your department's Box folder owner. See Request Access Into Your Department's Box Folder for how to ask for it.
New to Box, or need the Box Drive app on your computer first? See Get Started with Box Drive.
Get access to a OneDrive or SharePoint folder
OneDrive and SharePoint folders are shared directly by the person who owns them — JCB IT doesn't grant this access for you. If you need into one of these, ask the folder's owner to share it with you (or to give you edit access if you can only view it). If you don't know who owns it, or you were told you should already have access and don't, contact JCB IT and we'll help you track it down.
Common questions
- I don't know which kind of shared location mine is. That's fine — open a ticket with JCB IT and describe it as best you can (where you click to reach it, who else uses it, and what you need to do there). We'll identify it and get you to the right place.
- Someone in my group is leaving and they own our Box folder. Contact JCB IT so ownership of the folder can be transferred before they leave — that keeps your group's access from breaking.
- A quick shortcut when you're not sure exactly what to ask for. If you know someone who already has the access you need, name them in your request — JCB IT can use their access as a reference to give you the right folder and permission level.
Still stuck?
If you're not sure which of the above fits, contact JCB IT and we'll point you to the right place.
