How to Connect to the VPN for Your First Sign-In on a Windows Computer

Before you begin

  • You only need these steps the first time you sign in to a Cornell-owned Windows computer while you are off campus. Your computer has not yet verified your credentials, so it needs to reach the Cornell network first. Later sign-ins do not require this.
  • Cisco AnyConnect is already installed on your Cornell-owned computer and is available from the sign-in screen. You do not need to install anything.
  • You have your NetID and NetID password.
  • You know your home wireless network name and password.
  • You have the device you use for Duo two-step login with you.

Steps

  1. At the sign-in screen, click the globe icon in the lower right corner, then connect to your home wireless network.
  2. In the lower right corner, click the icon that looks like two displays stacked on top of each other. Cisco AnyConnect opens.

  3. Click Connect.
  4. In the Username field, enter your NetID followed by @JCB-VPN, for example abc123@JCB-VPN.
  5. In the Password field, enter your NetID password.
  6. In the field labelled DUO Passcode or Second Password, enter the Duo method you want to use:
    • push to receive a Duo notification on your phone
  7. Click OK, then complete the Duo two-step login prompt on your device.
  8. Sign in to your computer with your NetID and password.

Troubleshooting

Before you report a problem, try these quick checks:

  • Check your wireless connection first: confirm you are connected to your home wireless network before you open Cisco AnyConnect. The VPN cannot connect without internet access.
  • Your username is not accepted: confirm you entered your NetID followed by @JCB-VPN. Your NetID on its own, or your full email address, does not work here.
  • No Duo prompt arrives: confirm you entered push in the DUO Passcode or Second Password field, and that your phone has a signal. Then click Connect and try again.
