In order to support faculty in fulfilling the university mission, most employees in IT@Cornell who are designated as having On-Call technical support responsibilities in their formal university job description are required to be reachable via cell phone and/or SMS message both during and outside of normal business hours in the event of emergency.
Reminder: We will never include or ask for sensitive information in SMS messages.
Who This Applies To
This applies to employees in Information Technology job family, including but not limited to Technical Support Assistants, Technical Support Specialists, Technical Consultants/Advisors, Network Engineers, IT Security Engineers, Systems Engineers, Programmer/Analysts, Application Analysts, Application Programmers, System Administrators, Project Managers, IT Area Supervisors, IT Area Managers, and IT Assistant Directors.
Exceptions
Notify the Network Operations Center (noc@cornell.edu) if any of the following exceptions apply or will apply to you.
- This does not apply to time taken as Vacation or Health Care/Personal time, or Funeral Leave.
- This does not apply to any time that is part of a documented family medical leave.
- This does not apply to employees who are employed through an external contractor.
- This does not apply if you are outside of the continental United States.
How to Sign Up
To sign up to receive On-Call messages, please share your contact information (the phone number you wish to be contacted at) with the Network Operations Center (NOC@cornell.edu) via YOUR university e-mail account. The message must come from YOUR account. No one else can sign your phone number up to receive On-Call messages.
To change or update your contact information, contact NOC@cornell.edu via your email account.
Methods for Opting out of receiving SMS Text Messages
If you do not wish to receive SMS messages as part of your responsibilities, with the approval of your supervisor or director contact NOC@cornell.edu.
Your supervisor or director may modify or waive your on-call responsibilities by mutual agreement with you.
Depending on the circumstance you may be able to fulfill on-call responsibilities by having a license for the OpsGenie application assigned to you; you may be able to be on-call from designated locations, e.g. home via a land line, etc.
If your duties have changed and are no longer accurately reflected by your job description, please work with your supervisor and the Office of Human Resources to update your job description by your next annual performance dialogue.
