Classroom AV Etiquette: Powering Down, Cable Management, and Leaving the Room Ready for the Next Instructor
Purpose
To keep classroom technology reliable, organized, and ready for the next instructor. Following these simple steps helps prevent damage and ensures every class starts smoothly.
Before You Leave the Classroom
-
Power Down the System Using the Touch Panel
-
When you finish teaching, use the touch panel on the teaching station to turn off the AV system.
-
Tap “Power Off” and confirm when asked.
-
This shuts down the projector properly and resets the system for the next class.
-
Return All Cables to the Cable Cubby
-
After you disconnect your laptop or device, place all cables (USB-C, HDMI, USB, and Ethernet) neatly back into the cable cubby on the desk.
-
Do not leave cables hanging or stretched across the surface.
-
Returning cables prevents tangles, damage, and tripping hazards.
-
Do Not Unplug or Move Equipment Under the Desk
-
Please do not unplug, move, or adjust anything located under the teaching station.
-
The cables and devices below are part of the classroom system and must stay connected for it to work properly.
-
Be Careful When Adjusting the Teaching Station
-
The teaching station can raise and lower.
-
When adjusting it, make sure no cables are pulled tight or caught underneath.
-
Pulling the desk too far can unplug or damage cables.
-
Leave the Teaching Station Clear
-
Remove any personal items, papers, or adapters before leaving.
-
This keeps the space clean and ready for the next instructor.
-
Do Not Peel or Pick at Stickers or Labels
-
Do Not Move the Teaching Station or Furniture
Why It Matters
Following these steps helps Cornell’s AV team keep classroom systems working smoothly for everyone. The cables, connections, and touch panel are designed to stay in place—moving or unplugging them can cause system failures. Taking a moment to power down and tidy up ensures the next person can begin teaching without delays.
