Goal Statement

Cornell Law School (CLS) recognizes that some community members may wish to use a first name other than their legal name in the various systems where name is available to staff/ faculty/ students.  The goal of CLS is to ensure that preferred first name is used wherever legal name is not required.  Many of the systems CLS students use are not controlled by Law IT.  If there are specific cases where student/ staff/ faculty see a discrepancy with this goal, they should submit a ticket to law-helpdesk@cornell.edu so it can be looked into.  We can respond with the appropriate information as to why legal name is required, or investigate why preferred name isn’t being used when it should be.  Before submitting a ticket, please be sure you have the read the related articles here to make sure they do not cover the discrepancy you are reporting.  Also, please be aware that it can take up to 48 hours for preferred first name changes to be reach CLS and be reflected in CLS systems.
