Administrative rights on Cornell Law School (CLS) machines are typically reserved for IT staff supporting your machine. This is to keep CLS computers and data secure, and to remain in compliance with the Audit Office and University policy. For times when administrative rights are required, IT staff are able to assist in-person or remotely.
If you feel that you need administrative rights on your computer, special requests must go through an approval process. These requests should be directed to the IT Director. When administrative rights are granted, the following will apply:
- A separate account will be created to be used when you need to elevate your privileges.
- The account will not be used to log in to your machine, disable patching, perform any software upgrades that are being blocked centrally, or perform any other activity that is intended to interfere with or circumvent the standard operation of your computer as configured by IT staff. If you have a question about whether an administrative account should be used for a certain activity, please check prior to its use.
- In general, the account will only be made available temporarily and will expire after a short period of time.
- Regular reviews of administrative accounts will occur, and you may be asked to provide documentation as to the need of the account.
